Let It Ride

Don't miss this one...
Let It Ride is one of those lost treasures. Dreyfus is at his comic best and David Johansen (Buster Poindexter), Teri Garr, Jennifer Tilly and the rest of the cast are excellent as well. FUNNY throughout. Leonard Maltin, what were you watching? Featuring some very true-to-the-track moments, this movie wins going away. (Based on the book "Good Vibes" by Jay Cronley...read it!)

A great ride, a good laugh, quirky characters...
Even if you are not a Richard Dreyfus fan, you should see this movie at least once. Filmed in 1989 but timeless, this is one of those movies that you actually buy because you know you will watch it over and over again. Each character is so rich in personality that you will be drawn into the story because of them, you are in for a great ride. Teri Garr was in her prime as "Trotter's" Richard Dreyfus' wife, even the ticket seller at the track becomes someone you want to see again because he is just one of the people who become essential to the web of racetrack family in this funny, funny story. AND surprise, surprise, the end is wonderful and makes you feel good! So unusual in these days of "reality based" story lines. See it and have a good time.

We love the longshots
Is it possible that no one rated this film less than five stars? If you watch this movie, you'll see why. LET IT RIDE is one of those quiet sleepers that, at first, attracted a very narrow audience. When it premiered, and when it was released on video, no one I had asked had known of the film's existence. Now, more and more people are asking me if I have. I smugly say, "You bet!" (Bad pun intended.) This is one of those tightly-scripted, perfectly-acted, beautifully paced comedies that make you wish more like this were made. Put your money on the right pony and pick this one up. Sorry, Smarty Jones.

Cow Belles [HD]

Love Cow Belles... Love Aj and Aly!
I just watched this movie and I love it. I have been an Aly and Aj fan since day 1. Meaning Alyson on Phil of the Future and Now You See It... and there debut single/music video Do You Believe in Magic. I highly reccommend you watch it on Disney Channel and buy it on dvd when it's released. Also be sure and pick up a copy of there debut cd Into the Rush featuring the singles Do You Believe in Magic, No One, Walking on Sunshine, Rush and the theme from Cow Belles On the Ride!

An excellent film!
The story of this movie was interesting. I usually don't pay attention to the movie that is being played at dinner, but for multiple reasons, I was drawn to watch this.

Aly & AJ plays two daughters that works for their father's dairy company. Something terrible happens, and the two daughters strive to help out to keep the business going. There were also many micro problematic situations in the movie, just like in real life, that always kept the story dyanamic and interesting.

There's guy/girl problems, sister problems, business problems, suspected thievery theories, conspiracies, work/life/family matrix complexities, and the general class jealousy/conflicts. There were probably others, but those are what I remember generally.

Overall, I loved the movie and there was actual thoughtful meaning in it.

This makes a perfect birthday gift for anyone! As well as something for your own collection if you love Walt Disney movies OR just Aly & AJ...

"Lifes Amazing When you're on the ride"
I Love this movie staring Amanda & Alyson Michlka

it was their first movie together!

The Tower

'The Towering Inferno' goes Korean - and it's freaking AWESOME!!
Completely by accident, I recently ran across - online, where else? - that last year a Korean version of 'The Towering Inferno' was a big hit in theaters. I freaked out; 'The Poseidon Adventure' and 'The Towering Inferno' are two of my favorites since childhood, I own the Special Edition DVDs and could watch either one (especially 'Poseidon') over and over again. Determined to see THE TOWER, I finally tracked down a copy. Not the best subtitles (and that's an understatement), but really focusing (and backing the film up a few times) they were do-able ... and good GOD, did I love this film!

Tower Sky is a set of twin luxury highrise towers right in the heart of the big city (I'm assuming Seoul), connected by a bridge about halfway up. It's Christmas Eve, and a swanky, huge White Party has been planned for the rich residents and various VIPs in the city ... and managing it all is Dae-ho, a single dad who wanted to spend Christmas Eve with his daughter Hana but has to...

Towering Excitement
I wrote a review of this movie in conjunction with an imported all region DVD release, and I just want to say that if anyone thinks about buying this, you're in for a treat. I predict, that in the future, this will become a favorite seasonal movie, as the story takes place on Christmas Eve. Spectacular production values and effects, edge of your seat suspense, some funny moments and likable characters, all add up to give this disaster movie a cut above the rest. I saw this in a theatre back in December 2012, and I couldn't wait to tell everybody about it who, like myself, love a good disaster movie. So grab your invitation, take the elevator up to the top level in the beautiful Sky Tower, and, as Margo Channing said, "Fasten your seatbelts-it's going to be a bumpy night !"

Disaster Film Updated for Modern Audiences
Some film genre never dies. A 2012 Korean movie "The Tower" ("Ta-weo") is a good example that proves the popularity of the genre of so-called disaster film. Directed by Ji-hoon Kim ("Sector 7"), the film follows the genre's template, with a collection of narrative threads and effect-ridden action sequences.

The story goes like this. On Christmas Eve a terrible accident happens at a 108-story Seoul residential high rise The Tower Sky. Occupants and staff trapped inside the building struggle to survive. Fire fighters attempt to rescue them. Characters, mostly likable ones, are played by an impressive ensemble cast, including Kyung-gu Sol, Ye-jin Son, Sang-kyung Kim and a veteran star Sung-kee Ahn.

This is more like a remake of "The Towering Inferno" made in 1974, with some of the memorable scenes from the disaster film classic updated for the modern audiences. The "Tower Sky" is a twin building that has a skybridge (like Petronas Towers in Malaysia). Those who have...

Blood Runs Cold [HD]

Your average slasher film
I really really wanted to like this more but I didn't. My main complaint about this movie is the pacing is very slow and you do not see the killer enough in my opinion. Kills were ok but not the greatest and the acting was really weird. Evidently this was filmed in Sweden or something and the whole movie they are trying to speak perfect english and make it feel like an American film which is very werid, awkward, and sometimes funny to watch. The main selling point in this movie I think is the killer because I think he is awesome looking and has something not quite right with him. Worth a rent but not the $6 price tag. Just wait till June when this is released.

The Ice Man Cometh
This was basically a Slasher movie about a woman that goes to a house in the Icy woods for a well needed rest ,she meets up with an old boyfriend at a local bar. They reminisce about old times then he and 2 of his friends "another couple" come back with her to hang out and end up spending the night in the creepy house she's staying in. Short on Plot but good on Gore and it has a very cool and interesting killer.
It has a short running time but that seems to be the trend these days especially with Indie Horror/Slasher Films. The kills were good and the effects done remarkably well especially since I heard that they were working with an absurd 5000.00 Budget.Yes Five Grand,(gasp) but they made it work. The camera work was good and there were some very chilling moments,no pun intended.I love a good slasher in the snow flick,Think Donner Pass and Cold Prey although I liked the plot of these two better but as a whole with the gore and the killer I Believe (Blood Runs Cold) is right up...

OLD HOUSE IN THE WOODS
Winona (Hanna Oldenburg) is a stressed out musician who rents a house in the woods so she can go to the town bar. Here she meets her old boyfriend Rick (Patrick Saxe) who can't read a line and his two lively friends Liz (Elin Hugoson) and Carl (Andreas Rylander). They decide to take the "party" back to the house, one that has an unwanted guest who looks exactly like the guy on the cover.

The opening scene was a slasher special effects dream. The were cold faces covered blood and snow. The older dried blood had turned dark, almost black, while the fresh blood from the wound was bright red, dripping like Karo syrup. Snowflakes that had fallen on his coat was mixed with blood. Clearly they knew what they were doing with special effects. The plot wasn't very linear and the action starts at 40 minutes into this 77 ,minute film, which accounts for the teaser opening shot.

The acting was not impressive, these are all newcomers. They also needed better lines. Toward the...

Daltry Calhoun [HD]

"Get high on grass - the legal kind!"
In tiny Ducktown, Tennessee, Daltry Calhoun's burgeoning sod enterprise is threatening to go bust when the teenaged daughter he abandoned 14 years ago and her mother pop up out of the blue. May, the mother, is terminally ill and wants Daltry to take care of their daughter after she has gone. Now Daltry must try to come to grips with suddenly being a father raising a child he doesn't know, while facing financial ruin.

Katrina Holden Bronson wrote and directed this leisurely-paced slice-of-life dramedy about a man living down his past and his smart, musically-gifted daughter, June. Daltry Calhoun also is about heartwrenching loss and about hope and a sort of redemption. The film is funny and touching, and tinged with an undertone of bittersweet sadness. Bronson draws out very mature performances from her actors. Knoxville is pretty darn good as Daltry. Nothing of his Jackass persona is seen here, but instead, the viewer is witness to a startlingly layered performance by the...

A Great Movie for the Whole Family
I really liked this movie. I was surprised that Quentin Tarantino was one of the producers, his stuff seems to have a bit of a bizarre twist, and yet this movie was like "Disney" friendly. The actors were great. It wasn't "Disney" predictible. The plot was good and it flowed along nicely. The theme of the movie is about relationships. I definitely recommend this movie. Ciao

Great little movie!
I've read a lot of reviews that said this was a bad movie. It wasn't--it was a great movie! It was nice to see Johnny Knoxville in a role outside of the one we're used to seeing him in in Jackass. He played a sweet guy. I like movies with happy endings, and I felt that this was one of those movies. I'd recommend it to anyone, especially if you're a Johnny Knoxville fan like me!

Bullet to the Head With Bonus Features

H to the Yeah! Fans of Showdown in Little Tokyo rejoice.
A completely retro movie. I flashed back throughout this flick to some of the best years of my life as I thought about films like Dolph Lundgren's "Showdown in Little Tokyo," "Red Heat," and even "They Live."

What you have here is Stallone in his "Cobra" mode, a true bad ass, take no prisoners type of hero. He plays Jimmy Bobo, and he's hellbent on revenge after his partner is knifed by the dude from "Game of Thrones." I'm glad Jason Momoa is in this film because for the first time in my life, my girl dragged me to see a Stallone flick!

Enter in Detective Taylor Kwan, an upright law enforcement-type dude, who uses his investigative powers to discover Jimmy Bobo is an active hitman, and he and his partner killed a powerhouse in the criminal underworld. In fact, Kwan is certain Bobo's partner died as a result of the hit, and tries to lure Bobo into working for him to find a ruthless criminal.

The two eventually form an uneasy alliance and the movie is...

STALLONE AND THE 80'S ARE BACK!!!
This movie is high octane fun! Stallone is in rediculously good shape for 66! I have been a fan of his since i was a child growing up in the 80's. So I have seen a boat load of Stallone's films, the good and the bad. This is one of his best! Don't let the critics fool you, this is a must see if you are a fan of this type of film. My girlfriend who is not a fan, even liked this movie. We found ourselves laughing at the banter between Stallone and his new partner, who happens to be an Asian cop. Stallone is constantly throwing racist comments at him, but it is all in good fun. Stallone's age works to his advantage, his face is chiseled from years of wear and tear, as is the rest of his body. He looks like he was carved out of stone. There is no other actor like him. Christian Slater plays a small, but good roll, as a crooked lawyer. The masquerade ball he throws for his guests is done well. It's fun to watch Stallone creeping around the party wearing a strange mask. I don't want to give...

SYLVESTER STALLONE IS AMAZING...
Bullet to the Head. The name is based on a French Graphic Novel. Sylvester Stallone plays a Hit Man and the character suits him very well. He is very likable. Stallone delivers a great performance. The movie, is loud, explosive, funny and very entertaining. I loved the rock and roll music that plays throughout the movie. It adds up to the 80's feel that the movie has. Walter Hill did a good job directing.
Bottom line is, Bullet to the Head does not disappoint. Certain actors have come and go. But legends like Sylvester Stallone have proved over and over that they can continue to be on top of their game even after being in the movie business for FIVE DECADES.
Good job Sly. You are FANTASTIC.....

Going Cardboard

Great Movie!
I highly recommend this to anyone who is into playing modern board games. I found the whole movie to be fascinating.

Fascinating Film About Modern Board Games
Though now a bit dated, this film provides a unique window into the world of board gaming and its roots. If you're an avid board gamer or just want to learn about a fascinating subject, this is definitely worth your time. I was quite impressed with all of the notable board game "rock stars" that were featured. They included the designers of the big hits like The Settlers of Catan, Dominion, Power Grid, and many more.

Boardgamegeeks
Nice overview of the current "revolution" in gaming of merging New World "Ameritrash" themed card games with figurine-based "Eurogames" that followed Settlers of Catan. Worth checking out if you are enthralled in the fangs of boardgames.

42 (with Bonus Features)

Plaaaay Ballll!
"Plaaaay Ballllll!" Yes, the Boys of Summer are at it again and this time, I learned a LOT about where American baseball has been and the fundamental changes that have happened in my lifetime. Even though we already know how it ends, thanks to a terrific PG-13 script by Brian Helgeland (Oscar for "L.A. Confidential") this insight into the Great American Pastime is an excellent reminder of how far we have come, thanks to courageous trail blazers like Jackie Robinson, who integrated professional baseball in 1945 at the instigation of Branch Rickey, a baseball executive who loved the game.

We cringe at the language used to attack our hero, we are saddened by the refusal of hotels and restaurants to serve a team that includes a black man, we are enraged by the racist heckling that takes place and we cheer when we see a man quietly rise above the rancor and "just play ball."

Here is a sample of the (huge) wonderful cast:
* Chatwick Boseman ("The Express" and...

Tale of Real Life Heroism
When I was a kid Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey were history, I read about them in books. But my baseball heroes were Billy Williams and Fergie Jenkins, to me they were always just baseball players, their being black wasn't a factor in either my liking or disliking of them, and "42" brings home the truly heroic effort and forces Jackie Robinson had to overcome.

"Sports movies" are best when they're a metaphor for other areas of our lives. "Field of Dreams" isn't really about baseball, "Rocky" isn't really about boxing, and "Hoosiers" really isn't about basketball. What those movies speak to are other forces in our lives that hopefully bring out the best in us, and while "42" isn't metaphorical it speaks directly to our views of race and racism.

"42" takes place between 1946 and 1948 when Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) brought Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the Brooklyn Dodgers and integrated baseball. The plot is as simple as that, the story isn't...

A great story and outstanding performances but hampered by ham-handed paint-by-numbers directing
42, written and directed by Brian Helgeland, is based on the real-life story of Jack Roosevelt "Jackie" Robinson, the first African-American baseball player to play in the major leagues. Robinson's story is well known to many, but to anyone who isn't, 42 (Robinson's number when he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers) will serve to acquaint them with the man and his achievements against the backdrop of the times he lived through. The cast is excellent and give outstanding performances, particularly when recreating the feel of the times and the way it felt to watch Robinson play.

The story begins in 1945, when Brooklyn Dodgers owner Branch Rickey (a deftly turned performance by Harrison Ford) makes the decision that his team is going to be the first major league baseball team to recruit and field a black player. He takes his time, going over the various prospects with his staff, and finally settles on a short-stop currently playing for a black league team, the Kansas City...

Tower Block

did not keep me interested
The movie is boring, the sitting very off, looks like a second hand movie. when I buy my movies, they keeps me on the edge of my seat. This one did not. I wish I could return it.

Great little suspense thriller
I saw this when it showed at Fantastic Fest in 2012, and it's a great, simple, and unique thriller. If you're in the mood to watch terrible things happen to varying levels of terrible people, this is the movie for you!

Good suspense thriller, but a lot of plot holes
It takes about 15 minutes for this thing to get going, but once the sniper started picking off people through their living room windows, i was hooked. Taken on that level, this is a good movie. But once the identity of the sniper is revealed, i started asking a lot of questions and there aren't any answers that make sense. It would almost have been better if they had never told us the identity of the bad guy, and had him disappear into the night. If you can get past that, you'll like this movie.

The Wedding Planner [HD]

The Wedding Planner
Mary Fiore is the wedding planner extraordinaire. Since she has always been unlucky in love, she decides that those that can't wed - they plan! While crossing the street, her heel becomes lodged in the street grate. As she tries to free it, a dumpster comes loose heading her way. In the nick of time, she is pushed out of the way, but hits her head on the pavement and looses consciousness. When Mary comes to, she finds out that handsome Dr. Steve Edison saved her. Her assistant sets up a date for them that works out very well except when he begins to kiss her it starts to rain. The next time that she sees Dr. Steve is when - surprise surprise - she meets the groom of the current wedding she is planning. Mary vows to remain distant and to plan the best wedding for Fran and Steve, but the heart wants what the heart wants.

This is a very entertaining and heartfelt movie. Jennifer Lopez is wonderful and Matthew McConaughey is sexy and charming. What great chemistry...

I personally loved it :-)
This is the movie where I began to love Matthew McConaughey, and where I began to see that Jennifer Lopez is not a bad actress (in this type of role).

Basically she meets him and they have a connection, and little does she know that she already knows his fiancee because she is planning their wedding.

It's a cute light-hearted romantic comedy and if you like that genre, you will love this. Yes there are corny lines and outrageous situations, but that is part of the fun. It's a great movie that all romantics will love.

"Let's dance," is not the same thing as, "I love you."
When we first catch sight of Mary Fiore (Jennifer Lopez) in action, she is depicted as a lying, manipulative business commando more interested in precision than the mental state or happiness of her clients. Mary will say and do anything to make certain HER weddings go off without a hitch. All her clients have to do is show up and let her shove them around. Then she goes home alone, no surprise, and we're expected to feel sorry for her. They spend half the movie building her up as some ironclad bully in high heels only to abruptly reduce her to a wishy-washy whiner caught up in some slapstick antics only the Marx Brothers could pull off.
Mary meets her foil, in guise of a possible suitor (Matthew McConaughey), when a runaway dumpster almost takes her out. Instead, he takes her out. Oh by the way, he's otherwise engaged (but while the intended is away, the rat will play). In true Harlequin fashion they almost kiss (does this make their indiscretion chaste but not pure?)...

An American Girl: Saige Paints the Sky

Worst of the AG movies
We are a hardcore American Girl family, with lots of dolls and collectibles, all the movies, and 3 little girls (and their mama!) playing with these items and engaging in these stories every day. We have read all the books and were VERY excited for this movie's release. The books were favorites for my daughter, who is very much like Saige.

So it is with great disappointment that I must proclaim this to be everyone's LEAST favorite AG movie. The script is filled with platitudes and cliches, the soundtrack is repetitive and overbearing, the story is thin, Jane Seymour is dreadful (get a dialect coach, already!) and as a previous reviewer stated, the horseback riding scenes are comically bad. The close-ups throughout the film are distracting and badly filmed. It's a direction debacle. And Teh Drahmahz! and the giggling, and the BFFs! are nauseating. Even my 7 and 9 year olds were rolling their eyes and calling out "CHEEEEESY!" at our first viewing.

Positives:...

Quite Dramatic but with Good Spots
I believe this is #7 of the American Girl movies, and overall, our AG girls (ages 6 & 9) enjoyed it; however, be warned, it spews lots of emotional huff and puffiness.

Saige, a modern girl, wants to save the art class at her school and regain a close friendship. She loves painting and horseback riding with her artsy, Bohemian grandmother, played by Jane Seymour. Saige's fairly well to do parents play a secondary role in the movie but are loving and wise.

Conflict ensues from girlfriend cattiness about who is whose best friend, and the message here, of course, is let's work together, appreciate each other, and not play games with favoritism.

There's a fair amount of melodrama here, but the young actors are very good; the music is up and bouncy, the singing good and harmonious, and most of the shots just fine. The upclose horseback scenes are too obviously set-up, and probably better left off; Jane Seymour, who I really like, came across odd and too...

Wonderful!!
Wow, what a great movie---My 8yr old has already watched 3 times----What a great family movie. The american girl movies are always so inspirational and teach so many values!!

Barnacle Bill

A missing masterpiece
I have a VHS copy of this film, taped from a Public Television broadcast many years ago. I would kill for a US-format DVD.

I can't understand why this film is not available. Alec Guiness in a Ealing comedy?

For those who have not seen it, it's about a British naval officer -- the scion of a famous line of British admirals -- who has to quit the service due to chronic seasickness. The officer -- Guiness, of course -- winds up commanding an amusement pier on the Channel Coast. When he runs into trouble from the town busibodies, he takes some drastic action (no spoilers, but a quite brilliant solution to his problem). Very much in the mode of Passport to Pimlico in that the comedy comes from the unconventional efforts of some wacky characters to escape the postwar British austerity.

Great performance by Guiness -- it should not be lost.

BRW: My copy of this film is titled "All at Sea". I'll take a DVD copy under either title.

Please put this fine classic film out in U.S.A. Format
I have never seen the film, "Barnacle Bill," except for a short clip many years ago. And, yet, from that little clip, I could tell it must be an excellent movie. After all, the star is Alec Guinness, and it is an Ealing Studios production. The Golden Gong almost never lets one down. I would love to see this fine film, I have heard so much about, and hope someone will finally put it out in U.S.A Format. I'm sure it will do well in the American market, and it will be saving a classic film for future generations. Please do something good and bring this film to the American market.

Overlooked Alec Guinness Gem
I first saw this on TV over 35 years Ago. I always wanted to see it again but didn't remember the title only the actor. Earlier searches of the internet for Alec Guinness films failed to turn it up. I found it with "Admiral gets seasick" on a Goggle search. Though a minor Alec Guinness film I always enjoyed it. No spoilers here. If you like British comedy buy this overlooked gem.

Drift [HD]

Surfing in West Australia 1972: Nice Surf Scenes and Clichéd Storyline
Set in 1972, West Australia, a 2013 Australian film "Drift" follows the story of two brothers with conflicting personality traits. Andy Kelly (Myles Pollard, who also produces) and Jimmy Kelly (Xavier Samuel) are surfers who start a surf shop in their garage. While their business goes well, their childhood friend Gus (Aaron Glenane) gets involved with a local biker and drug dealer Miller (Steve Bastoni).

Sam Worthington plays JB, a hippie-like surf photographer travelling with a beautiful Hawaiian girl Lani (Lesley-Ann Brandt). Third-billed Worthington, known for Hollywood blockbusters like "Terminator Salvation" and "Avatar," appears in a comparatively smaller role.

Though the film claims the story is "inspired by actual events," I think most of it is very loosely based on facts. The film's drama is not very interesting with stock characters and a familiar storyline. Conflicts arise between the characters in a predictable way, and then they are easily...

Good movie: nice plot, realistic acting, simplicity without unnecessary effects
I recently watched this movie and thought it was very interesting. It has a good plot and interesting characters. Simple filming, realistic expectations. I liked the fact that it did not have extra effects or complicated relationships evolving between the characters just to keep the plot going. It deals 60% with entrepreneurship and 40% with surfing. Maybe they should have marketed it that way, it would probably 'sell more'. A disadvantage is that in the beginning of the movie the relationships between the characters are not explained well, and the viewer gets confused. But apart from that I enjoyed the movie.

Did not care for movie at all.
Very boring movie, seemed to be no plot at all, turned off about half way through it. Do not recommend.

Marco Polo: Return to Xanadu [HD]

Marco Polo Jr's long journey
This film was originally made in 1972 by Eric Porter Productions in Australia, as that country's first animated feature film. It was a 50-50 co-production deal between Porter and American artist and script-writer Sheldon Moldoff.
As one of the unit directors on the film, I thoroughly enjoyed working on it and, for its budget of maybe one-eighth of a contemporary Disney animated feature, I felt that it stood up pretty well.
But I always thought that it would benefit from a bit of tightening up, and so was interested when Ron Merk contacted me a few years ago with the news that he and Moldoff were going to rework the film.
In general, I think they have done a good job, although the climactic battle between Marco and the evil villain is not as good as I was hoping it would be. Nevertheless, I give it four stars - so go ahead and buy it, it's good fun!

Not a remastering of the original, completely destroyed
I was pleased to see they had remastered the original Marco Polo Jr. versus The Red Dragon. However, after watching the movie, I was horrified they completely tore the movie apart and turned it into some horrific Disney-fied freak show. This is the worst remake/remastering of a movie ever. My childhood was destroyed by whoever made this. Terrible. I want to give it negative stars.

Real Good!
If you know our history, you will enjoy this movie. The story approaches the basic content of the way history said it happened, but the plot is different. You will like the twist in the plot and the laughter will come.

Happy in the Valley [HD]

STOP!!!
ok so now I know the first two reviews where from either the director and the producer! This is a HORRIBLE MOVIE! Terrible in every sense of the word. The story makes absolutely ZERO sense and has no foundation, no direction, no POINT! The character development is comical, and it feels like they were actually just making things up as the went along. In the end you are certainly left HAPPY..that it was finally over!

Realistic & Touching
This is one of those Indie Films that will really take you by surprise. A young photographer named Wade is down on his luck and finds employment with a man who shoots erotic photos for a living. Stewart Fox was once a young dreamer himself and can relate to Wade's desire for a more kosher job, but he's learned the hard way that he has to do what it takes to pay the bills. Queenie, an eighteen year old model/actress, finds herself in a similar position and isn't quite ready to bear it all for the camera. With their careers hanging in the balance, the younger generation has to decide if they want to sell out or stick to their dreams. But that is only part of the story here. This movie is also filled with realistic relationship issues. Fox is an alcoholic struggling with his marriage, Queenie was abused by her brother which presents challenges to her blossoming relationship with Wade. The ex-nun across the street is walking around in an alcoholic daze, and her nephew the cop is...

Hidden Gem !!
I checked it out because I've always liked William Forsythe and read somewhere he won an award for it at a film festival. It looks very indie but I took a shot and turns out it was amazing! A hidden gem one of a kind dark comedy type movie. Really loved it and recommend it.

Somm [HD]

Articulate, Intelligent, and Funny People
This engaging documentary follows six fellows who are prepping for the prestigious Master Sommelier exam. Less than 200 candidates have passed this test since it began in 1969; it has one of the lowest pass rates of any exam in the world.

Our 2013 Seattle International Film Festival screening audience was interested, entertained and invested in the outcome. We each had our personal favorites and were appropriately anxious as the test day neared.

Award-winning Director Jason Wise has accumulated wonderful interviews with articulate, funny, intelligent (and ambitious!) candidates. Many of them have photographic memories and when you learn all the minutiae that they must master, it would seem that ONLY candidates with photographic memories could compete! The scope of their education (and those flash-cards) is mind-boggling.

It's fun to get acquainted with the candidates, their wives and girlfriends, other Master Sommeliers, and interested professionals...

Very good!
Very entertaining, very informative and well edited. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found myself rooting for a few of the characters. I have recently started to enjoy wine and it is amazing to see how deep the subject matter is. I have a new respect for the somms that come to our table.

Excellent documentary showing the difficulty of the exam
I attend the yearly Sommelier conference TEXSOM even though I am not a sommelier and have an interest in wine. It has been a great learning experience meeting the different level sommeliers including Master Sommeliers, 7 of which right now are in Texas. When this documentary was first announced I knew I had to see it because I wanted to understand what the candidates taking the Master exam went through. Wow, I give every person who attempts this exam credit. The documentary shows the effort and time four candidates put into taking the exam and the eventual outcome for each of the candidates. If you have any interest in wine, this movie is a must see!

This is a movie about air delivery: airdrop by parachutes, and amazing short field landings by STOL aircraft like the amazing Pilatus TurboPorter and the larger C-123. If you like Airborne things, this movie is for you, its funny and upbeat compared to your typical Vietnam movie and in a way does greater honor to the courage of the pilots who lived on the edge while flying these hairy missions. The TurboPorter landing on the side of the mountain makes the whole movie worthwhile...add to it '60s music and sexy Nancy Travis, what more do you want?

I find this movie far more interesting than the Lethal Weapon series, so it soars in my book as one of Mel Gibson's best movies.

don't bother me while im colorin!!!
Air America was the United States "airforce" stationed in Laos
during the Vietnam war aiding our allies (amongst other things)
Mel Gibson plays veteran air american Gene Ryback and Robert Downey plays Billy Covington the FNG to the outfit.(He ends up being recruited in the states by a fast talking agent of the CIA after he (Downey) is grounded for being an...in the air.
The Film explores the adventures and antics..or hi-jinks as the pencil necked air america geek notes of t he pilots. Which includes drunken whorehouse parties, target practice with silencers on a miniature golf course and my favorite, gun running and landing an aircraft on a mountain.
A serio-comic movie it delivers the goods and was is enjoyable to watch
Thumbs up^

Funny Movie
I saw this film in the theater when it was released and feel the same way about it now as I did then. The characters are all unique and it's a different look at the Vietnam war. Some of the music from the soundtrack may sound a little off. I don't know if it was a licensing problem but some of the tunes are not the originals. Not a big deal though for what is a good flick

Tai Chi Hero [HD]

More steampunk & martial-arts action!!
Back in January, I reviewed a steampunk/martial-arts hybrid film titled TAI CHI ZERO (click here to read that review http://matthewscottbaker.com/blog/2013/01/movie-review-tai-chi-zero-2013/), which is the first of a trilogy. I complimented the film on its originality and fast-paced action. The second film of the trilogy, TAI CHI HERO, is available now and is definitely a worthy follow-up to the original. With higher stakes and even wilder fight scenes, this second film will have you begging for the third and final film to come out!

I can't decide if I like the first or second film better. Both are excellent in their own regards and have high re-watch factors. But both also have their own distinctions. The first is revolutionary with its story; I believe it is the first ever steampunk film to integrate martial-arts action. But the second film broadens the storyline and introduces new characters, along with new threats and villains. This is accomplished while keeping...

Nice Kung fu flick
I ended up watching this one day when I was bored. The movie is really well done with a blend of comedy and action together. If you decide to watch this one be sure to watch Tai Chi Zero first. The first movie is more comedy but it is also really good.

Better Than The First!
Finally being able to kick back and watch the sequel to TAI CHI ZERO was a major treat; truly a dazzling film! I thought TAI CHI HERO was better than the first in every way, with more story, amazing fight choreography, beautiful locations and a first-rate story to wrap up the story started in the first installment. I was really surprised by the amount of emotion packed into this film, a jail sequence in particular was especially moving.

Everything looked and sounded great on this release, picture was outstanding. I was very entertained with this film and didn't want it to end. Thankfully a third installment will be on the way and it should prove interesting considering the Stormare sub-plot. Chinese fantasy lovers are really going to dig this film. Nothing too heavy, just the right amount of fighting and some fun machines. Bravo!

Adults, move on. But if you have kids, go for it.
My almost 8 y/o daughter and my 10 1/2 y/o son loved it. I think having an Italian grandmother with a wooden spoon helped. My wife and I didn't mind it, if you're not going to watch it with kids, don't bother.

HORRIBLE!
I watched this movie because James Gandolfini & some of the other stars from the Sopranos. Apparently, James Gandolfini appeared in this movie as a personal favor for Steve Schirripa (also in movie). This movie is proof that Gandolfini was a true friend (you have to see it to believe it)! Michael Imperioli played a German Scientist. Tony Sirico & Vincent Curatola rounded out the Sopranos' cast that appeared in this movie. Notwithstanding the appearance of these actors, the movie was absolutely hideous!

Love Those Soprano Boys
I was so excited to see a return of the Soprano Boys! The movie is cute and it is a kid's movie after all, but a little too theatrical for my taste. Loved the cast including Rita Moreno. She is darling. A little hard for kids to follow however I would think.

Running Free

Myth busted: Wolverines can be very affectionate to humans
I first viewed this movie about 10 or 12 years ago, and I truly fell in love with it, and shortly thereafter contacted its maker, Steve Kroschel.

Wolverines, which this movie is about, have a ferocious reputation in all of the far North latitudes, where they live still. American indians have told stories for many centuries about their cunning, intelligence and fierceness, and trappers hated and feared them.

This story is about a young boy who becomes friends with an orphaned "kit" -as baby wolverines are called- during a summer in the Alaskan wilderness. The beauty of the scenery and the touching affection between the two of them is very heart-warming and shows not only the potential fierceness that a wolverine is capable of when facing grizzly bears and wolves, but also the deep affection they are capable of with humans who treat them well and the constant playfulness that is naturally part of their nature, as it is with their cousins, the otters...

move,one paw aka running free
i purchased this movie and 2 books on wolverines for my 45yr, old son,he loves anything to do with wild animals,so now i told my 2 daughters what to get him for his b,day, xmas,he is so hard to buy for,we end up getting him gas cards,or cards to buy something at his favorite store etc.i watched the movie one paw at his house,it was a wonderful movie,we all loved it,tyvm, carol pendergast.

Big Stan

Awesome "dumb" funny movie
I am not sure why the movie studios dropped this movie but they must be nuts. Its hilarious!! One long, non stop, butt joke movie. Maybe thats why they didnt back it. Cause of the topic. But it is a cult classic in the making. Just freakin brilliantly "stupid funny".

David Carridine is perfect as the Master. Great role in a comedy. Schnieder had a low budget but it doesnt show at all. He made without a doubt as good a movie as Duese Biggalow 1...not 2...that one was a stinker.

But this flick is great. I heard him do an interview on Howard Stern on Sirius Radio...man if you are missing him you are missing brilliant radio there too..Howard is in MVP form on Sirius..but Schnieder worked his tail off on this flick and it shows. Great job Rob!!

Im an Idiocracy, Holy Grail, Grandma's Boy type of comedy fan. This movie is as good on a completely unique topic.

Very funny. The best of Schneider
I like all movies of Schneider, except European Gigolo, a boring and overstretched extension of Deuce Bigalow. In Big Stan, the brilliant Schneider is back, playing an arrested con man who hired a mysterious Kung Fu master to train him against the potential jailhouse rapers he's about to face in six months' time. As expected, he needed to fight not only other prisoners but also the warden and the only other apprentice of his Kung Fu master. If you want some big laughs (Both my wife and I really laughed throughout the movie highly frequently) and dont mind exaggerated Kung Fu acts, this is excellent for you. You will also find the most beautiful and sexiest Jennifer Morrison (the female doctor subordinate in House MD). The supporting actors are great, too. I would say this is the best movie from Schneider so far. Pity for him that it cannot be released on theatres in US. I bet it would have been a big hit. Definitely an excellent choice in the rental store after a hard day's work...

Rob Schneider at his best
I liked this Schneider film better than his Animal series and also better than the Gigolo series. I do hate that some of the scenes made it inappropriate for younger kids but overall it's a pretty good and funny film. One surprise and a deviation from other Schneider films was the absence of a cameo by Adam Sandler for it seems that each have a habit of showing up in the other persons films either as a principal actor or in a cameo position. If Adam was worked in I missed it. It was nice to see though that Rob worked in a part for his Mother also.

Blackout [HD]

Good story. Slow build to the payoff. Nice twist.
An entirely adequate thriller/mystery. Up-and-coming lawyer, Harley Roberts, wakes up from a bender with a dead girl in his apartment. In a panic he hides the body. Then it happens again. Paranoia sets in. Did he blackout and kill these girls? Harley lays a trap to find out what is going on.

The one drawback to the film is the sound quality and in many cases the incidental music overpowers the dialogue. And, the build up is long, but there is a payoff - an entirely satisfactory payoff that you won't expect. Minor technical issues, which don't detract much, aside, Blackout is a solid thriller/mystery. I am ambivalent about how sympathetic I was to how Harley deals with the situation. You don't want him to get caught, because like him, you want to know how the girls end up in his apartment.

Robert Covington as Harley's BFF Alfred and Bill Oberst Jr. as Rommel Stanton the creepy maintenance man both put in notably solid performances.

The film has...

i like independent, low budget films with budding actors, however...
this film was not good. i don't mind movies that aren't hollywood blockbusters and prefer the lesser known writers, directors and actors. this movie sounded awesome and the general concept and story are good. the execution of the filming and acting are really bad. the main character seriously needs to hang it up. dude, acting isn't your thing. his best friend was a little better, but not much. the fiance is very pretty but also leaves a bit to be desired in the acting department. like, seriously i can act better than these people, and i'm a software developer.

anyway, this is a $1 rental, not a $4 rental. if they spent more than $4 to make this movie it was entirely way too much. what a bummer.

Blackout
Bad acting, Plot dumb. Story stupid. The hero didn't seem surprised to find a body in his shower or bed. Call me crazy, but I think the average person would have freaked out when finding a dead body in their shower. Not get dressed and go hang out with friends, And if I found another body in my bed a while afterI guess I would be Mr. Cool and chop it up or NOT.

Sky Fighters (Chevaliers Du Ciel)

Better than Top Gun? Kinda...Yeah
I should begin by saying I have a querky style and I am an aviation nut, so movies that portray aviation will always get my attention. That said, I was more a fan of Iron Eagle than Top Gun in the 80's, and though this movie and Top Gun are oft mentioned together I think it sits neatly between Top Gun and Iron Eagle, and I liked Sky Fighters (or as I originally saw it, Les Chevaliers du ciel) a whole lot better. It certainly bests the recent film "Stealth" (which I saw, and consider a C- grade movie)

The story is somewhat thin, but at the same time not so far fetched; The attempted theft of a combat aircraft involves two of France's best pilots (wouldn't be a movie if they weren't)in a fairly complex terrorist plot. It also does not have a lot of air combat, dogfights, or stuff going 'ka-boom!' but it didn't bother me.

The acting was passable, and as they are European, I had no prior exposure to taint my opinion of them. The leads were just a bit more believable...

Sky Fighters
Think Top Gun with a Gallic twist. Impressive air to air action and photography, real - instead of CGI flying scenes, and best of all, no blatant violations of the laws of physics. Although the dialog is dbuued into English, the dubbing is done extremely well, and does not detract from the overall viewing experience.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone who enjoyed Top Gun for its flying scenes.

Excellent movie!
The film centers around the Mirage 2000 and the French Air Force. I only gave this movie 4 out of 5 stars for two reasons. The first is the audio wasn't great. The timing between the lips and the sound is a little off. The second is because the story is only B movie quality. What really sets this movie apart from others is they used real shots of the jets and didn't use CGI. They weren't cheap about putting the planes in the movie either, you will see lots and lots of the Mirage 2000 in action as well as a few other planes. If you have a love of aviation you will really enjoy watching this movie, if nothing else just for the film work they did with the Mirage 2000. You will see the Mirage 2000 flying over spectacular scenary and doing amazing manuevers!
The creators of the film used a specially designed camera built inside a fuel pod of another Mirage 2000 to capture the aerial shots for the movie. Only another Mirage 2000 could keep up with the planes being filmed.

Just Like a Woman [HD]

Two friends, one journey, no limits
Some critics are calling this engaging film a modern day `Thelma and Louise, but with a happy ending'. Yes, is it is a story about tow disconsolate women who decide to take their lives in their own hands and set out on a road trip to prove they can indeed survive. As written by Joelle Touma and Marion Doussot and directed by Rachid Bouchareb (highly regarded for his touching films `Days of Glory' and `London River') JUST LIKE A WOMAN takes on a pair of women who have issues with men and allows us to see the building of a friendship of meaning and one that overcomes sour consequences with gentle grace.

Mona (Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani), 26, is an immigrant from Egypt who was brought to America by her now mother in law (Chafia Boudraa) to run her in-laws' mini market in Chicago and to marry her arranged husband is Mourad (Roschdy Zem), a kind and gentle man who can't stand up to his authoritarian mother. Mona is harassed by her mother-in-law because after five years...

True friendship movie
This movie showcased what it means to be a true friend. It shows the struggles of two women and how leaning on each other helped them out. It was a refreshingly good movie.

Terrible representation of dancers
The basic premise of the movie was decent-and the actresses were likeable. The dancing was so poorly misrepresented though-and was such a key part of the film-it was impossible to ignore. Why would they not try to find someone with previous dance experience? Or use doubles body like many other dance movies do?

Wishing Stairs (English Subtitled)

29 times is a charm
Here we have one of the Whipsering Corridor movies, where two girls are our central focal points. They have this thing at the school they attend - apparently there is a way where you can get a wish from the "wishing Stairs" that are located outside one of the buildings. You simply climb all of the stairs, counting them, and an extra one will appear if you pray to the right spirit. The only problem is that this spirit is not much of the helping variety - it is more of the tricking/ screwing up your life type.

I liked this movie quite a bit and have to say it has all the things that makes the Whispering Corridor movies what they are. It has two girls that are the main people, a bizarre little story (this one has a folklore idea in it and I'm not certain if it is make-believe or it is actual folklore), and it has the all-girls school we get to know and love. It also has the creepy factor that outweighs the gore factor in any way - these movies ar emore angry spirits and...

BFF...
Two girls find their friendship ruined by envy and insecurity. When one of the girls is seriously injured and later dies, the title WISHING STAIRS come into play. The story quickly becomes an all out horror fest, complete w/ a psycho-killer, ghost, and strange murders! This final part of the "GHOST SCHOOL TRILOGY" is my personal favorite. Enjoy...

"Fox Fox, grant my wish. Make this a horror movie."
Once again, we are treated to a scene where a teacher slaps a student. How did this high school ever get its accreditation?

This is the third in a series of movies about ghosts roaming the halls of a high school. (It doesn't really matter what order you watch them in as they are unrelated but for their theme of hostile ghosts seeking revenge.) This time the story concerns two girls vying for a single spot in a Russian ballet school. Presumed friends, one girl (Yun Jin-sung) turns jealous and vindictive at the thought that her friend (Kim So-hee) could automatically "win" the spot on sheer talent alone. To gain unfair advantage, the jealous girl takes to the wishing stairs to secure less than divine intervention. That, and a good shove down a flight of stairs soon settles the matter (she cripples her friend who then commits suicide). To further complicate matters, enter a freaky girl (Eom Hye-ju), who is bizarrely devoted to the dead girl and wishes her back...

Our Wild Hearts

5+ Stars
This totally enjoyable movie is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It was well written and acted. Unlike many low budget family movies, the characters and plot were believable and touching. There wasn't one cuss word and no sex. The daughter had a cheerful personality, the fearlessness of strong convictions, while the Dad was quiet, but kind with strong convictions. The ranch hand who became the daughter's boy friend had admirable character qualities and a most charming personality. The shows main characters were all really likable. Of course there was the bad guy, but while certainly unlikable, his part was also believably well done. The Mom was her daughter's best friend. How often do you see this in the movies? Also if you are into horses, you will love this movie. It should come as no surprise that I highly recommend this well done family movie.

Nicely Done
Ricky Schroder and his family put together a really decent Hallmark tale about family, love and horses.

Teenaged and determined, Malibu girl Willow(Cambrie Schroder- daughter of Ricky) wants to meet the father she never knew. He's(Ricky Schroder) a cowboy whose ranch is in trouble. There's conflict and hurt between the two, and their obvious different lifestyles. They find a point of common interest in a wild mustang.

Surprisingly well shot and acted with beautiful country scenery and lots of horse action, the story's quite emotionally tinted at times, but still delivers a fine tale for the whole family, although little kids might get bored with the drama.

Produced, directed, written and starred in by Ricky, wife and family, his real daughter, in her introducing role, Cambrie, does a marvellous job as the teen in turmoil.

There's country humor thrown in, some mild peril(rated PG), and a bit too conveniently sweet ending tying it all...

sweet movie
This was a sweet movie . Good for all family members. I recommend it . Easy rent on amazon.com HUbby liked this movie too.

Would You Rather [HD]

Brilliant but flawed
I know this is by no means a perfect movie, but I truly loved it. Jeffrey Combs performance was fantastic and I really liked the story. There were really no surprises, but the casting and the dialog kept the movie interesting for me. The "choices" idea that runs through the movie caused for a lot of tension, but I feel that it could have been exploited a bit more. Most of the gore in this film is what plays in your head, because most of those shots cut-away. I found this very effective and was tense through most of the movie. I do want to say I feel a little guilty in liking this so much because there is a definite cruelty to the violence. Having said that, I felt that it was a compelling, tense, film that managed to entertain. I'm already wishing there was a sequel.

THERE IS A PROCESS INVOLVED
Iris (Brittany Snow) has a brother who needs a bone marrow transplant. The creepy Shepard Lambrick (Jeffrey Combs) offers to pay for it if she wins a game of a sadistic "would you rather," one that we quickly discover is played to the death. 8 people are assembled in a dining room and forced at gun point. Since Iris is the only person we know anything about, everyone but Scooby-Doo can figure this one out.

Amy, played by porn star Sasha Grey, is an aggressive player who immediately plays to win. Shepard has an obnoxious son (Robin Taylor) who insults the players.

There is a fairly decent intensity factor with this film, but it really doesn't stimulate the grey matter. The whole set up is rather inane. If you like the "ten little Indians" style movies with slasher elements, this one is satisfactory as long as you keep your expectations low. Perhaps 5 stars on a Red Box rental scale.

If you liked this film you might also like "Truth or Die" which I...

An Amusing Exercise In Sadism But, Ultimately, Not Quite Imaginative Enough
There will be some people who instantly dismiss the low budget shocker "Would You Rather" based on its rather unpleasant conceit. Indeed, the movie was brutalized by most mainstream critics upon its release. It currently averages a dismal 20 out of 100 possible points on the review aggregate site Metacritic. Despite this fact, I was never deterred by its ghoulish premise. I embraced it and it was a major selling point! I'm not squeamish, I welcome an experience that will shock and disturb me. Truthfully, I didn't hate "Would You Rather." I did, however, feel that it fell far short of its potential. At 2 1/2 stars, I'm giving credit to one of the B-movie greats. Jeffrey Combs (always the Re-Animator in my heart) gives an unexpected and offbeat performance as a bored millionaire that uses real people in his sadistic entertainment. He made me laugh on occasion and his interactions with his staff and his son are quite funny (although to be fair, maybe some of these sequences are...

The Spectre of Hope

Beautiful and Heartbreaking.
The Spectre of Hope is an amazing look at the work of photographer/economist Sebastiao Salgado. His visual exploration of the effects of a globalized economy on the third world is must know material for anyone living in the fast disintegrating first world. This movie shows us the plight of the 'other', and warns us that we are dangerously close to becoming these 'others'. As incomes become tenuous, as markets move in search of profit instead of happiness what is left behind are the growing masses on the short end of globalization. Mr. Salgado has captured all of this in the beautiful black and white images that make up this film. His conversation with John Berger illuminates the process behind this massive work photographing the millions of dispossessed.

Cul de Sac: A Suburban War Story

City of Meth and Tanks
This is a fascinating documentary about the world and San Diego, Calif. It takes the news story of a plumber who drove a tank on the highway and was shot by police and opens it up into a much larger exploration of post-industrial malaise in America.

The documentary shows how meth spread to San Diego via imperial wars such as Vietnam. There's also some interesting commentary by a cop there about how meth is a lower middle class drug because it appeals to the idea of self-reliance. Thus, meth emerges as a drug both imperial and Emersonian.

I found it especially interesting how we meet the tank driver, Shawn Nelson's, friends and neighbors and get to know them before we realize that they're meth users/ addicts. Especially poignant is the repeated testimony that there were lots of guys who wanted him to show them how to become plumbers too. There's a real sense of being stuck and locked in at the bottom here.

The essays are also excellent. They put...

Friggin awesome!
Woah!!! Blown away by how friggin original this movie is. Nice change of pace from the weak studio fare coming out so far in 2013. Way to go CH!

Sophomoric and Unoriginal
We watched this based on the other reviews. We like the actors but still had trouble finding much to enjoy about this formulaic film which basically covers all the same cliche bathroom, sex, and even racial humor. There is absolutely no "depth" to this film. I would pass on this one.

Josh Groban sings in this film, but it is not what you are used to.

Better than I expected.
As long as the movie isn't taken seriously, anyone should love it. The cartoon animations threw me off a little as he wasn't a cartoonist or artist in anyway. They would have made more sense had the main guy been an online cartoonist. But that is my only "real" complaint. Other than that, Coffee Town is just hilarious. More importantly. I'm glad I didn't have to wait till it came out on DVD. It is nice being able to see it while in theaters and not having to go to the theater, as I am a lonely bastard who has no one to go with.

Dead Man Down

Engrossing and Powerful Tale Of Revenge
DEAD MAN DOWN is a very engrossing and engaging tale of revenge. What starts out as a totally confusing and seemingly unrelated series of events ever so slowly comes together in a thoroughly riveting climax. Director Niels Arden Oplev's tale is methodically paced and ultimately mesmerizing as the story unfolds. Colin Farrell gives one of his best performances in a very underplayed characterization and Noomi Rapace is totally impulsive in her captivating performance opposite Farrell. Together they are amazingly convincing as the viewer never is given a chance to get a good read on these two actors who powerfully and so subtly reveal just bits and pieces of their broken and twisted lives that by happenstance place them on a singular road of salvation for their own humanity. To say too much would give the plot away, but by the end the entire experience gels in a visually cathartic conclusion. I highly recommend this film.

WWE Studios made a good film. Who knew that was possible?
Wow who knew WWE Studios could actually make a good film. From the trailers I first saw a few months ago the film looked like a really good action thriller yet there was no sign that WWE produced this film and I think that was purposely done by WWE Studios and the distributor studio in FilmDistrict. I mean when you bring up WWE Studios a good film certainly isn't the first thing that comes to mind. The only half way decent film they produced was The Condemned with Steve Austin. It was stupid fun thrill ride, but at best was a two and half to three star film, so I can understand why I didn't see the WWE's name openly attached to Dead Man Down. I think this was the first film WWE actually took seriously putting time and money into the film, and bringing in a good cast and director. Still when I learned that the WWE was a part of Dead Man Down a few days ago my expectations for the film dropped considerably, and I think that was a good thing because I was pleasantly surprised that Dead...

Revenge!
Danish director Niels Arden Oplev brings his talent for relentless uneasiness on the screen in this story by Joel Howard Wyman. The theme is not good guy versus bad guy because every character in the film is a bad guy/girl and once the audience tunes into that then the emphasis is on that elusive human reaction to trauma called revenge.

Victor (Colin Farrell) is a Hungarian immigrant whose wife and daughter were killed and he is out to destroy the Albanian crime gang that caused their death. He has infiltrated the crime empire run by ruthless kingpin Alphonse (Terrence Howard), with the single purpose of making Alphonse pay for destroying his once happy life. Victor's best friend is crime cohort Darcy (Dominic Cooper) whose obsessive curiosity about his friend opens the story for insertion of all manner of bad tings. As he meticulously orchestrates his vengeance from his high-rise home, Victor watches and is watched by Beatrice (Noomi Repace, a mysterious young woman, her...

Knocked Up (Blu-ray + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

Details on the different versions of this DVD release
Loved the movie. That said, I was confused on what the differences were on the 3 DVD versions, but found some details that I've posted below. As for me, I'm going with this two-disc unrated version.

Basic extras -- available on all (both R-rated and Unrated Editions):

- Deleted and Extended Scenes
- Gag Reel
-"Directing the Director" (Capote director Bennett Miller stops by to help Apatow get the job done)
- Line-O-Rama (Tons of alternate takes)
- Audio commentary with Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen and Bill Hader
- Roller Coaster Featurette

Goodies available only on the Unrated releases:

- MORE Deleted and Extended Scenes (some pretty raunchy ones, reportedly)
- Topless Scene: "Web Design"

And finally, extras available only on this 2-disc Unrated version:

- Judd Apatow's Video Diaries
- Finding Ben Stone (A mock casting session)
- Stripper Confidential (Rogen and Paul Rudd wade...

Great movie, good disc (blu-ray) review
The movie is great. If you haven't seen it, I'd highly recommend it. This one is directed by Apatow himself; so, you you know it's one of the better ones that carries his "brand"...unlike some of those cheeseball movies with Will Ferrel. More to the point, you get the sense that he made this movie for himself or his family. For example, his wife in real life is Leslie Mann, and his daughters play his and Leslie's daughters in the movie. But enough about a review of the content...I assume that if you're considering the Blu-Ray release of Knocked Up, you've seen the movie before.

I don't know about you, but when I am considering purchasing a Blu-Ray, what I want to know is (in order of importance) 1) How good does it look? 2) How good does it sound? 3) What special features distinguish it from the DVD version that I might possibly own already. The picture quality is good but not amazing. I have yet to find a BD that has worse picture quality than its DVD counterpart,...

Real fun movie and great on blu ray
Writer/director Judd Apetow is building his own franchise and making a real name for himself with his high quality comedies with his unique special brand of humor and great casting. SUPERBAD does seem to be the most popular thus far but KNOCKED UP is in the same league for me.

Story line is pretty basic. We have an average stoner guy and a beautiful professional woman who meet at a bar, get drunk, have sex and she gets pregnant. In real life such different types of people may not try to make a relationship work but here it is very believable and the development of each character about life, love and acceptance is very realistic as the pregnancy develops. Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen are in top form as their lives are forever altered. Dialogue is funny, circumstances are realistic and having the marriage of Heigl's sister to compare with works great. Paul Rudd shines here and steals all the scenes he is in.

This is a bawdy comedy but manages to put...

As soon as I heard how long Judith and Brice were together, I would have thought they set a solid foundation and that they're marriage was strong but since the movie trailer makes it clear that Judith does not resist "Temptation", I knew that was not the case. The adultery was coming and I wanted to know the circumstances that led to the betrayal.

Judith (Journee Smollett-Bell): She was an educated woman and I believe she loved Brice, but the woman had an adventurous side waiting to get out. There was nothing wrong with that. She didn't want to 'exist her life away'. There was nothing wrong with that. But she made bad choices because she listened to the wrong voices. If she and Brice would have communicated better, maybe things would have turned out differently. If she...

What Was I Thinking ...
I like Tyler Perry and expected so much more that this ridiculous mess. Anything would have been a better use of that $3.99. The only thing worse than the worn out story line was the horrible acting. Kim Kardashian should have been my first hint.

My Father's Garden

Must see!
This is a wonderful story with a dramatic twist. It's hard to distinguish between a documentary and a novel, but it tell's an important story of the current state of our agriculture. It brings up important possibilities for the future of our food and should be seen widely.

My Father's Garden in Health Class
I have used this compelling film in my 8th grade Health Science class as part of our unit on nutrition and organic gardening. I like to use the film because it documents the development of farming with chemicals in a very human way. The film has the quality of a home movie and the individual lives it focuses on help make the story very real to my students. This film does not preach, but does show us how farmers innocently used chemical pesticides and fertilizers thinking they were farming with the newest scientific advances. This documentary is informative and moving, and important for all of us to experience.

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll go organic!
"My Father's Garden," is one of the most important and poignant documentaries I've seen on the plight of the American farm and how petro-based chemical agriculture has altered this country's rural heritage. Fred Kirschenmann is my organic farming hero. If I could choose all over again, I'd pursue a career in organic farming because of him.

If you care at all about what you eat, if you care at all about the health of our rural communities, if you care at all about the well being of the people who grow the foods you consume, buy this DVD. Watch it. It will forever change the way you think about what ends up on your plate. A must-see.

Angelina Ballerina: Mousical Medleys [HD]

Singing and Dancing!
This is a classic Angelina Ballerina DVD that is full of dancing and songs. Very cute and musical. My kids (my boys and my 2 year old daughter) enjoyed it and we have watched it a few times now. I love though how Angelina and her friends work together to solve problems, make decisions and be a good friend. It is full of great lessons for preschoolers and very simple for kids to understand. This is a great DVD whether you have an old or new Angelina fan!

I received this DVD to review in exchange for sharing my honest opinion.

Very Amazing and Awesome Musical Stories on this Very Amazing DVD!
Once Again another Great and Amazing Dvd with Very Wonderful and Musical Stories! 1 Story is about Art,ANother About Recycling, another about working together as a Team, another about Opera and History and one about performing a Special Musical. All these awesome stories are very Heart Warming and Very Incredible for both Kids and Adults!

Great for the Musically Minded
My three year old daughter Paige is going to be the musical one in the family as she loves anything to do with music and dance. She has always loved Angelina Ballerina but I knew she'd be especially excited to watch Mousical Medleys since it has an emphasis on music as well as dance.

Angelina is a spunky little mouse with a talent for dance and fun friends that she has many adventures with. Things don't always go according to plan for Angelina but she has a way of working things out. I like that this DVD encourages working together and solving problems; perfect for my three year old!

"Angelina's Camembert Parade" was Paige's favorite episode because we recently went to a parade and she can't stop talking about it. It's funny the things that stick in kids mind at certain ages. We have been to many parades before but this is the first time it really made an impact.

Angelina Ballerina: Mousical Medleys is clean fun for your toddler and even those that...

Happy Gilmore

I don't think your lungs can handle this kind of laughter...
You're looking for a comedy on DVD. Let's see...

You don't want any comedy that's too sophisticated, like "Deconstructing Harry".

You don't want any comedy that's too insane, like "There's Something About Mary".

You JUST want to laugh.

I'm proud to say "Happy Gilmore" will make you scream with laughter, my friend. This is Adam Sandler's platinum hit, the best comedy of his career. It has the coveted Amazon.com five-star customer rating, a rare find indeed for the comedy lover, and reviewers call it "the best golf comedy since 'Caddyshack'". The movie stars Adam Sandler (Bulletproof, The Wedding Singer, Billy Madison) as Happy Gilmore, a short-fused hockey player who just realized he AGAIN didn't make the cut for his hockey team for the 10th time in a row. After taking out his raging anger on the coach, he life begins to spiral downwards when his girlfriend leaves him, and he realizes his grandmother's prized house built by...

The only guy to take off his skate and try to stab someone!
This movie has got to be one of Adam Sandler's best. Notice how he always plays people with somewhat short fuses, though some not as violent as Happy Gilmore. But that's what makes this so funny. With an opening sequence in which he tries out for a hockey team for the tenth time and isn't accepted, and ends up beating up the coach, you know where this thing is headed. This movie is more than just a regular guy with an awesome shot due to hockey and an awful temper. But the movie is at it's best when Happy gets into a fight with 'The Price is Right' host Bob Barker and Bob wins! Anyone who hasn't seen this scene can't call themself an Adam Sandler fan! The basic story of this is pretty simple, it's about a guy who thinks he was born to play hockey, but still hasn't made a team. Then he meets a guy with a wooden hand who used to be a golf player, who tells him he should start. So he does, and he's got an awesome drive, but his putting stinks. And he has an arch enemy, a...

Adam Sandler does it again!
Adam Sandler does it again with "Happy Gimore." By far his best movie, Adam plays a wanna be hockey player with a short-fuse. He gets in many fights in this movie, one with Bob Barker I might add.

The story starts out with the audience finding out that he has tried out for this Minnesota hockey team too many times and has never been accepted. He has had enough of this happening to him so he tries to stab someone with his skate.

He leaves the ice and later on a used to be golfer with a wooden hand noticed his ability and soon enough he is on the PGA tour. The only catch is, he doesn't want to be someone that wears tight clothing and volleyball hats while playing golf....he wants fans cheering, beach-balls being hit, and fans calling his name.

A rival golfer hates this and tries to get rid of him and that is where the story takes off. Sandler plays a great role and is very funny of course. Now, I don't know about you, but if you say you like comedy but haven't seen...

In His Hands (Entre Ses Mains)

Been there, killed that
Anne Fontaine's disappointing Entre Ses Mains aka In His Hands is one of those films you've seen long before you actually watch it because it's been made by people who've seen too many films and think the best way to create a classic is to homage one somebody else made earlier to death. In this case the victim is Claude Chabrol's Le Boucher, relocated from a small village to a very metropolitan Lille, with Jean Yanne's butcher and possible serial killer and Stephane Audran's schoolteacher who falls in love with him reworked into Benoit Poelvoorde's insomniac vet prone to depression and Isabelle Carré's insurance claims adjuster. There are a few new wrinkles added to the mix - Carré's character is happily married but still drifts into a near-affair in spite of her doubts - and it's easy to see why the actors were attracted to the film since it places the emphasis firmly on the characters and performances rather than the thriller plot. Poelvoorde in particular is...

The Indigo Evolution

Indigos
It was a great documentary!! It gave me an understanding of the Indigo Children and also that we all have these gifts. A good movie to watch if you question what Indigo Children are.

Touching, Inspiring
This movie was a delight from start to finish. It was thought provoking, philosophically & scientifically sound and well presented. The music was enchanting and flowed well with the format. It was especially comforting to hear interviews of Indigo's of all ages & backgrounds. From actors to parents, and from Native American Hopi Elders to Ram Dass - all tell us that the Indigo phenomena are here acting as an evolutionary jump in our human experience.....a bridge from heaven to earth. Truly worth watching.

A Turtle's Tale 2: Sammy's Escape from Paradise (DVD/Blu-Ray/3D Combo)

A Turtle's Tale 2 Rocks! A beautiful adventure for the whole family.
My family truly enjoyed the first A Turtle's Tale, so we were very excited to watch this sequel. A Turtle's Tale 2: Sammy's Escape from Paradise has many of the same lessons as in the first story, that teach children about sealife, caring for the environment, teamwork and friendships. In this story Sammy and Ray are now much older and the adventure includes their adorable grandkids named Ricky and Ellen. Being the loving and caring grandfathers they are, they work to protect them from the dangers of the big wide open sea and in the end when Sammy and Ray need them the most, their grandkids are their for them.

This was another adventure with Sammy my whole family was able to enjoy together as a unit. Sometimes, some animated films fail to attract the attention of my whole family, A Turtle's Tale is definitely not one of them. I found the animation to be even better than the first film and the music is beautiful and so much fun. I would recommend this DVD for all ages and any...
